Carl the Critic: First Impressions of "Final Destination 5"
65Car the Critic Web Show episode 2 "Final Destination 5"
"Final Destination 5" ("The Empire Strikes Back")
First Impressions: This is different than a normal review, because no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't watch the actual "Final Destination 5" movie, for a number of reasons:
1. I have been really busy all week, and haven't had time to watch movies.
2. I am trying to save my money, and blowing it all on a movie that has already been made is not my idea of a good time.
3. I have never really liked the "Final Destination" series, because although the concept has potential to be good, every movie I have seen from the series has always been poorly presented.
I could go on but I mention all of this in my web show.
Now I know if you are a fan of the series you will say something like "Oh you just don't want to see it because you don't like the series." Although this is a valid point, it really isn't the reason, I try to let things surprise me like "Sucker Punch" or "Re-Animator". After watching the trailer I had decided that this was going to be a crappy movie that is overly priced just because it's in 3-D or Imax charging somewhere between $13-18+ a ticket.
They also announced that they are making a 6 and 7 "Final Destination" movies which gave me pause for thought; After destroying planes, trains, race cars, roller-coasters, and now a bus on a bridge, what other means of transportation are people going to survive from in order to be picked off one by one like the grapes from a vine? All I can think of are blimps and space shuttles. At any rate, I'll have plenty of time to watch the exact same story by then but in case you want a story, here is what I understand.
Story: A guy (who is depicted in the trailer as some kind of narcoleptic) is on a bus when he has a vision that the bridge that was under construction will crumble under the buses weight...
Wait a girlfriend impaling second, haven't we been here before? Why yes, 4 extremely final times.
... anyways he has a vision and has a hissy fit and tells everyone to get off the bus.
Later on after the bridge collapse our protagonist with his friends are at the funeral of those who were not so lucky to get off the bus. It is here where they meet William Bludworth they guy from the very first "Final Destination" movie, who tells the survivors that "Death doesn't liked to be cheated." (I'll admit that Tony Todd makes a great mysterious character, judging by the trailer, this is the same guy who was not only in the original "Final Destination" movie, but also in "Candyman" where he proved that he can be extremely creepy!) Anyway he starts stalking all the survivors and always appears at there funeral or place of death, sometimes disguised. He reveals that in order for the survivors to live to see next Christmas, they must kill someone in order to take their life...
For me this has a minor plot hole, what if the person who you kill is suppose to die any way? Would you still get their life? And if so doesn't this mean you still need to die? And why is it that Death (or at least the personification of it) is so O.C.D. about his job. He can't just do his job and take people's lives, he has to do it to specific people in a specific order at a specific time, in a very specific (and often disturbing) way.
Movie Talk: As I said before, this is basically the exact same movie as "Final Destination" but just shot in 3-D, with more idiots, and a different means of transportation. I don't know if "Final Destination 5" is better than "Final Destination", maybe I will rent the movie on Netflix or something when it comes out. Or I can just save my money and watch the TV show "1,000 Ways to Die".
The little Angel who sat on my shoulder and scolded me for not wanting to watch "Re-Animator", is upset that I decided to skip this but I'm sorry the trailers for the movie just didn't make me want to see it now.

I'm not a fan of the "Final Destination" series, so I don't plan to see this one. It sounds repetitious, the way you describe it. Been there, done that.
Thanks for the info,
Rob
I'd say the first "FD" is the only one you really have to see. I wasn't expecting much from it when it first came out cuz it was on the ass end of the 90s "teen horror" craze (i.e. "Scream," "Urban Legend," "I Know What You Did...", etc.) but it was a lot nastier and more disturbing than all of those flicks put together. Unfortunately, the repetition of the exact same story in all of the sequels just watered everything down.
When too many rewriters happen they always get out of shape and BORING.
I really enjoyed Final destination 1-3 however, I didn't see 4 and won't be seeing 5. As you said I am trying to hold on to my money in these economic times. Only films worthy of attention will get my money. This is not one of them. The thought of a 6 and 7 is just a waste of everyone's time. I will be watching these on television.... when I am really, really bored.lol
I enjoyed your review...both the written version and the video version...great job getting the video feed included with you very impressive stuff....your show is getting better with each new episode. As for the movie....I know the series exists....but I have never seen any of the movies and probably never will.....but I enjoyed your review. Voted up and useful.
Pretty well written and recorded review of this film. Although like you, I haven't seen this movie either, and from looking at the box office numbers for it, I don't think I'll make it a point to see it anytime soon. Of course, knowing my luck, someone will request that I see this, then I'll have to at some point. lol.
It doesn't surprise me that this film is just retreading what the previous chapters did, as it seems like most horror film franchises fall into that trap eventually. Kind of sad, but it's true. Anyway, thanks for writing this, and keep up the good work.
I never cared for the movies because you never see a monster. Besides, everyone on earth dies eventually so what is the point?

I've seen the previous four "FD" films and I'll probably get around to "5" when it hits DVD. The first and third films are my faves.
I did notice that the trailer for "5" announces that "the rules have changed," to which I can only say "it's about freakin time." By the fourth film the formula was showing pretty badly, right down to the inevitable scene where the hero explains to his friends "We were supposed to die! By not dying we messed up Death's plan! Now he's trying to close the loop!"
